Bruges Trip: First view of the canals

We had been in Brugge for hours but had yet to see a canal. We left Market Square, walked through the Burg again and passed under the arch onto The Blind Donkey Street, heading toward the canals.

The Blind Donkey Street

Bridge over a canal

Tanners Square, a little square with cafés and artists booths

A building with an unusual façade

Instead of featuring counts or saints, it displays the working folk doing their thing....

....like milking a cow.

We were drawn to this artist's work: paintings of Brugge so realistic, he posted a sign that said, "These are not photographs!"

The print we bought of the Rosary Quay which derives its name from rosaries made by local artisans and sold here centuries ago.  This view with the medieval buildings and the Belfry reflected in the water is by far the most popular scene in Brugge.

The Rozenhoedkaai (Rosary Quay)

The Nepamucenus Bridge with its statue of St. John of Nepomucen, the legendary archbishop of Prague.

Another view of the Rosary Quay

Did I mention that Brugge is known for its chocolate?
